Spanish coach Rafael Benitez has named former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as the best player he has ever worked with.
Throughout Benitez’s nearly 40-year coaching career, he has managed many top teams including Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, working with many great players, but the one he considers the best is Gerrard.
Benitez explained why it was Gerrard, telling the It Was What It Was podcast: “He’s the best player I’ve ever coached. He’s very good and we’ve known each other since we started working together.”
Asked: “You’ve work with (Cristiano) Ronaldo – do you think Steven is a better player?” Benitez said: “In terms of being a complete player, Stevie is powerful, he scores goals, he’s good in the air, he’s good with both feet, he can shoot from distance, short balls, penalties, passes, corners, free-kicks.
“He can still play defensively if he needs to. He’s got energy, he trains well and he’s a great professional. The thing is he’s a box-to-box midfielder from the start and he’s gradually understand the game.”
