Four Tailed Beasts

The Four-Tailed Son Goku (Yonbi no Son Goku) is a tailed beast sealed within Roshi of Iwagakure. It has been captured by Kisame Hoshigaki, then extracted and sealed by Akatsuki. It was later resealed into a resurrected Roshi during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Background

According to Tobi, the Four-Tails first came into being in the waning days of the Sage of the Six Paths’ life; to prevent the Ten-Tails’ resurgence, the Sage split up its chakra and used his Creation of All Things (Banbutsu Sozo) ability to create nine separate, monstrous constructs of living chakra, which would become known as the tailed beasts. The Four-Tails eventually fell into the possession of Iwagakure and was sealed into Rōshi at a young age.

Appearance

The Four-Tails primarily resembles a red-furred and green-skinned monkey, but with a muscular body of a gorilla. Its eyes are yellow and the pupils are white. It also has horns on its forehead, elongated canine teeth, and spike-like protrusions on its tails. The fur on its chin and on the top of its back resemble Roshi’s beard and hairstyle.

Abilities

The Four-Tails has the ability to simultaneously use the earth and fire natures, to spit lava from its mouth; something that hasn’t been seen outside the realm of kekkei genkai. Since it is a tailed beast, it is able to use the Tailed Beast Ball. Four-Tails is also shown to be very strong as it was able to lift and toss the Eight-Tails.

Kyuubi no Youko

The Nine-Tailed Kurama (Kyuui no Kurama) is the tailed beast sealed within Naruto Uzumaki of Konohagakure and was previously sealed within Kushina Uzumaki and Mito Uzumaki before her.

Background

Over the centuries, the Nine-Tails had gained a reputation as an age-old natural disaster, appearing suddenly out of nowhere to attack areas wherever human malice had collected and festered.

At one point during the time of the foundation of the shinobi villages, the Gold and Silver Brothers of Kumogakure were assigned to capture the Nine-Tails, but the beast swallowed them whole. However, the two brothers managed to survive and gain some of its chakra and power by eating the flesh of its stomach for two weeks, which caused the Nine-Tails to regurgitate them.

After that event, when Uchiha Madara defected from Konoha, he used his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan to control and use the Nine-Tails to help him fight against Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, to exact his revenge. The battle was so great that it tore the earth’s surface apart and created the Valley of the End. Despite being in control of the Nine-Tails, Madara was defeated and was believed to have died.

After the battle, Hashirama’s wife, Mito of the Uzumaki clan, sealed the Nine-Tails within herself in order to keep the threat that it posed contained, becoming its first jinchuuriki. Towards the end of her life, Mito passed on this status and responsibility to another member of her clan, Uzumaki Kushina, who later became the wife of Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage.

Twelve years before the start of the series, after the end of the Third Shinobi World War, the seal containing the Nine-Tails within Kushina weakened as she became pregnant and gave birth to Naruto. Despite keeping her childbirth a secret, Tobi discovered their location, killed their escorts, broke the seal, and seized control of the Nine-Tails. Since Kushina survived the extraction, Tobi tried to have the Nine-Tails kill her, but Minato arrived in time to save Kushina and brought her to safety with Naruto. After that, Tobi summoned the Nine-Tails into Konoha, and ordered it to destroy the village.

While the Nine-Tails went on a rampage in the village, it sensed Minato’s presence and quickly fired a Tailed Beast Ball at him, but Minato was able to teleport the attack to a far off location. The Nine-Tails was eventually released from Tobi’s control when Minato placed a Contract Seal on Tobi, but not before it had decimated the shinobi forces that attempted to repel it. Before the Nine-Tails could annihilate Konoha, Minato summoned Gamabunta on top of the beast, and later teleported it to Kushina and Naruto’s location, while letting its Tailed Beast Ball detonate away from the village. Soon afterwards, Kushina used her chakra chains to subdue the beast, planning to seal it back inside her before she dies. However, Minato, knowing that the Nine-Tails would revive without a host and a threat Tobi still was to the village, came up with a different plan to give Konoha the means to combat Tobi if he should ever attack the village again.

Since Minato himself couldn’t fully seal the Nine-Tails as it was, he used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal to seal its Yin chakra within the death god, before preparing the Eight Trigrams Seal to imprison the beast, along with its Yang chakra, within Naruto. The Nine-Tails realised Minato’s intention and took the chance to attack Naruto when Kushina was weakened, but its attack was unsuccessful as both Minato and Kushina quickly used their own bodies to shield their child, piercing them instead of Naruto. Before the sealing was complete, the Nine-Tails used its last moment of freedom to curse the pair.

For the past twelve years without Naruto’s knowledge of its presence within him, the Nine-Tails had been silently watching over Naruto.

In the anime, it was revealed that the Nine-Tails had left behind large amounts of its chakra during the attack. Kazuma collected and sealed the chakra within his own son, Sora, hoping to make use of its power for his own agenda.

Personality

The Nine-Tails is a destructive entity with a natural cunning and intelligence, but it does have a distinct sense of honour and possesses a loathing respect for Naruto. However, the Nine-Tails is also treacherous, as it was shown throughout Part II, it would relentlessly seize any kind of opportunity for it to usurp control over Naruto and tempt him to completely break the seal. Despite its animosity towards Naruto after he ripped its power, it was more than willing to give him power when facing Madara Uchiha, saying that Naruto was the better alternative. As the battle with Tobi and his Paths of Pain continued, the Eight-Tails pointed out the fact that the Nine-Tails was no longer consuming Naruto’s chakra, at the same time the beast was seen remembering what Naruto had said to and about him prior, possibly indicating a change in its behaviour towards Naruto.

The Nine-Tails bears an intense hatred for the Uchiha clan’s Sharingan, due to the fact that Madara had manipulated it to do his bidding in the past. In addition, the Nine-Tails has a grudge against both Minato and Kushina because they were responsible for its sealing and preventing its freedom.

The Nine-Tails believes a beast’s power comes from the number of its tails, thus thinking itself to be the strongest, and Shukaku to be the weakest, stating that the Eight-Tails should be able to defeat the rest of the tailed beasts effortlessly. Comments from both the Nine-Tails and the Eight-Tails indicates that the beasts know each other on a personal level. Moreover, when Naruto resealed the Nine-Tails, started to make an allusion to the Sage of the Six Paths, but it never finished its statement.

Appearance

Although the Nine-Tails primarily resembles a kitsune with red-orange fur and blood-red eyes, it possesses the upper-body structure of a human, complete with opposable thumbs on its clawed hands. Out of all the tailed beasts, the Nine-Tails’ form most closely relates to the Ten-Tails’. During its attack on Konoha, the Nine-Tails was shown to be around the same size as the Hokage Monument, and then later, despite shrinking a lot after having its Yin chakra sealed, it still remained a massive entity as its claw dwarfed Minato and Kushina. When Naruto separated the Nine-Tails from its chakra, its entire physique became visibly emaciated, but it later regained its former look after it had been consuming Naruto’s chakra while he was using its chakra.

Abilities

Even with its chakra taken, the Nine-Tails creates a Tailed Beast Ball many times its own size.

Being the strongest of the nine tailed beasts, the Nine-Tails is said that it can create tsunamis and flatten mountains with just a single swipe from one of its tails. With its massive supply of chakra, it can turn its roar into a powerful shock wave that can repel and destroy anything within its radius, increase its physical strength and speed, and fire Tailed Beast Balls. In the anime, it was shown to be able to create twisters and breathe fire.

During its battle with Naruto in his subconscious, it was shown that even though it had its Yin chakra sealed away, the Nine-Tails was more than powerful enough to overwhelm the Eight-Tails’ attempts to restrain it (although Killer B stated that he didn’t have full access to his own powers within Naruto’s mind), and effortlessly block Naruto’s Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan with its tails. Naruto also noted that it was extremely fast despite its massive size. Later, even after most of its chakra was taken by Naruto, it still had enough to create a Tailed Beast Ball many times its own size. If its jinchuuriki dies (causing the Nine-Tails to die with them), the Nine-Tails will later revive.

Even though it is extremely durable, the Nine-Tails, when caught off guard, can be weakened by attacks that deals with massive physical impacts, such as Naruto’s senjutsu-enhanced Wind Release: Rasenshuriken and Sage Art: Many Ultra-Big Ball Spiralling Serial Spheres. It is also susceptible to control by the Sharingan, though only Madara Uchiha and Tobi had accomplish this great feat. Sasuke Uchiha had also used his Sharingan on the Nine-Tails, but only to suppress a small amount of its chakra.

After Naruto conquered his dark side, it was revealed that the Nine-Tails also has the ability to sense negative emotions, after it inquired about the “real Naruto”. Naruto also gained access to this ability after gaining control of its chakra.

Ten Tailed Beast

The Ten-Tails (Juubi)is the original, primordial demon of the Naruto universe. All nine of the tailed beasts are but portions of chakra divided from the Ten-Tails. Tobi‘s ultimate goal, the Eye of the Moon Plan, is to capture and merge all nine of the tailed beasts back into the Ten-Tails, and become its jinchuuriki to cast the reflection of his Sharingan on the moon, casting a genjutsu known as the Infinite Tsukuyomi which will put the entire world under his control.

Background

Centuries before the founding of the hidden villages, the Sage of the Six Paths saved the world from the Ten-Tails. He managed to subdue the beast and sealed it within his own body, becoming what could be considered the first jinchuuriki. However, this offered merely a temporary solution to the menace: in the event of his death, the seal would dissolve and the Ten-Tails would once again be unleashed upon the world. Knowing this, the Sage searched for a more permanent solution. Ultimately, the Sage succeeded by using his Creation of All Things (Banbutsu Sozo) ability to divide the Ten-Tails’ chakra into the nine monstrous entities that would later become known as “tailed beasts”, scattering them throughout the world. As a final precaution, using Chibaku Tensei, the Sage entombed the physical remains of the Ten-Tails within a colossal stone prison and hurled it into the heavens, creating the moon. The astonishing feat of not only successfully sealing the Ten-Tails, but also suppressing it, made the Sage a godlike hero throughout the shinobi world.

Appearance

In the manga, the Ten-Tails has only been seen in silhouette, but the form of its body seems to be closest to that of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox’s body, but with several spiky protrusions visible behind its head. Also, it appears to have only one unique eye, which has four Rinnegan-like concentric circles, with nine Sharingan-like tomoe in the three circles closest to the pupil coloured red.

Abilities

As the fusion of all nine tailed beasts, the Ten-Tails was said to possess massive and overwhelmingly foul chakra that is potent enough to bring total despair and destruction to the world. Because the nine tailed beasts are merely by-products of the Ten-Tails, it is presumed that the Ten-Tails has all of their traits, condensed into a single body. It was shown having a single unique eye, but what it is or if it is a unique doujutsu is unknown.

Hachibi no Kyogyu

The Eight-Tails (Hachibi) is a tailed beast sealed within Killer B of Kumogakure after his cousin, cousin’s uncle and cousin’s father failed before him.

Nanabi no Kabutomushi

The Seven-Tails (Nanabi) is a tailed beast sealed within Fu from Takigakure. It has been captured, extracted, and sealed by Akatsuki. In the anime, the Seven-Tails is indicated to have been one of the two tailed beasts that Akatsuki captured before the start of Part II. It was later resealed into a revived Fu during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Background

Appearance

The Seven-Tails resembles a blue, armoured kabutomushi, with six of its seven tails resembling green insect wings, along with the seventh tail, all growing from the end of its abdomen. The stem of the tail is green but the wings are orange. Its eyes seem to be covered by a knight helmet like skull, it also has spike protrusions on its shoulders, and six legs, three on each side.

Abilities

Not much is known about the Seven-Tails but since it is a tailed beast, it is able to use the Tailed Beast Ball. It also has the ability to fly.

Five Tailed Beasts

The Five-Tails (Gobi) is a tailed beast sealed within Han from Iwagakure. It has been captured, extracted, and sealed by Akatsuki. In the anime, the Five-Tails is indicated to have been one of the two tailed beasts that Akatsuki captured before the start of Part II. It was later resealed into a resurrected Han during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

The Five-Tails primarily resembles a white horse, but with a dolphin’s head. It has two pointed long horns and three shorter horns in front. The ends of its horns, hooves, and tails are light brown, with some of the same-coloured spots before the brown areas of its horns and hooves. It also has red markings under its dark blue-green eyes.

Abilities

Not much is known about the Five-Tails, but since it is a tailed beast, it has a great amount of chakra and is able to use it to create the Tailed Beast Ball. The Five-Tails can also use its horns in combat, showing enough ramming-force to even injure the Eight-Tails.
